What does LOLER stand for?
LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998).
What is LOLER?
LOLER defined by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) as follows:
“LOLER regulations place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. This includes all businesses and organisations whose employees use lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not.
“In most cases, lifting equipment is also work equipment so the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) will also apply (including inspection and maintenance).”
What equipment is LOLER relevant to?
LOLER regulations apply to a variety of lifting equipment used in many workplace settings such as hospitals, care homes, factories, warehouses, construction sites, offices and residential properties.
Types of lifting equipment covered by the LOLER regulations include patient hoists, vehicle lifts, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPS) and cranes.

What is a LOLER inspection?
A LOLER inspection is most commonly known as a Loler Examination and is a comprehensive examination of lifting equipment. The examination protocol varies based on type of equipment.
Ideally a qualified independent and impartial third party should carry out proof load testing, such as HESL’s Engineer Surveyors who are DBS-checked and hold a recognised professional status (EngTech, IEng.).
The Engineer Surveyor will conduct a detailed examination of the equipment, including visual examination and functional checks and measurement of wear. Afterwards, they will complete a written report for your records.
